I recently went to Chengdu to give a lecture on French Porcelain, on behalf of the gallery Dumonteil and I was welcomed by the team of the new Temple House Hotel in the area of Jinjiang District and the shopping complex of Sin0-Ocean Taikoo Li.

The hotel was rather new and so was the area, so it might look a bit too perfect, but I experienced a very quiet time there. With 100 rooms and 42 residences, the Temple house hotel, opened by Swire Hotels, and designed by MAKE Architects was designed around a traditional temple, in the middle of the cultural ub of Jinjiang, hosting many historical buildings from 1920 ‘s and Daci Temple.

I also went to Jinsha Museum within the suburbs of Chengdu and visited the huge archeological site dating from Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, around 1200 before commun era. I was amazed by the number of artefacts, such as jades, ivory, animal and human remains, carved precious woods or ecstatic bronzes from the Chinese Bronze age. The display was very clear and the objects beautiful.

In 2006, after six years of construction, Jinsha Site Museum was finally completed. Covering a total area of about 38,000 square meters (9 acres), it mainly consists of Relics Hall, Exhibition Hall, Cultural Heritage Protection Center and Ecological Garden. It is a rare site museum among Chinese museums because of its combination of modern civilization and the civilization of ancient Shu State (Sichuan Province was called Shu State in ancient times), as well as the combination of ecological environment and culture. Located just 6 miles (10 km) away from downtown, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has been created and imitated the natural habitat in order that they might have the best possible environment for rearing and breeding. It cares also for other rare and endangered wild animals with an area of 560 mus (92 acres), 96% of which is verdure. Giant pandas, lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks as well as over 20 species of rare animals are fed and bred there throughout the year. Verdant bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air, a natural hill scene and a beautiful artificial view are merged ingeniously at the base. website: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
